US-Canada Trade War: Timeline of Tariffs
The US-Canada trade war is an evolving and ever changing situation.
Below is a timeline of the tariffs as of March 13, 2025:
March 13, 2025:
- US imposed a 25% tariff on Steel and Aluminum globally effective March 12, 2025.
- Canada retaliated with a 25% tariff on an additional $29.8 Billion on products imported from the US effective March 13, 2025.

March 7, 2025:
- The US announced a temporary pause on tariffs until April 2, 2025 for Canadian exports compliant with the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
- Canada maintained its 25% tariffs from March 4, 2025.
March 4, 2025
- The US imposed a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports.
- Canada retaliated with a 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of US goods, including jewellery (see tariff items #7102.39.00 to #7117.19.90).

EDC Trade Impact Program

US Temporarily pauses 25% Tariffs until April 2, 2025
US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause on tariffs until April 2, 2025.
The pause applies to Canadian exports that are compliant with the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) formerly known as NAFTA.
With respect to the jewellery industry under the CUSMA agreement, refer to Section XIV – Natural or Cultured Pearls, Precious or Semi-precious Stones, Precious Metals, Metals Clad with Precious Metal, and Articles Thereof; Imitation Jewellery; Coin (Chapter 71).
Canada continues to impose the 25% tariffs that were announced on March 4, 2025. List of products from the United States subject to 25 per cent tariffs effective March 4, 2025 until all new levies are lifted.
Canada has delayed imposing Phase 2: A 25% tariff on an additional $125 billion worth of US goods, that was to go into effect on March 25, 2025.

Canada Imposes Countermeasures
U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, with the exception of Canadian energy products, which will face a 10% tariff.
In response, the Canadian government has implemented retaliatory measures, imposing a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods entering Canada. These tariffs will be introduced in two phases:
- Phase 1: A 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, effective March 4 (for jewellery industry related products scroll to Tariff Items # 7102.39.00 to 7117.19.90).
- Phase 2: A 25% tariff on an additional $125 billion worth of U.S. goods, effective March 25.
These tariffs will apply exclusively to goods originating from the United States, in accordance with Canada’s country-of-origin rules under CUSMA.

US Tariffs on Canada Delayed for 30 Days
Further to the message from the CJA’s Chair this morning, it has been reported that a pause for at least 30 days has been placed by the US on the 25% tariffs on Canada. As further developments unfold the CJA will keep you informed.

President Trump’s 25% Tariffs on Canada – Statement from CJA Chair, Angela Betteridge
The Canadian Jewellery Association (CJA) is monitoring the situation with the 25 % tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on all Canadian products (except energy which is at 10%) planned to take effect tomorrow, February 4, 2025. The situation is rapidly evolving and changing. We will keep you informed.
The Canadian Government has responded with retaliatory tariffs on American products including diamonds and jewellery.
The CJA has had and continues to enjoy relationships with many American companies and industry associations. The uncertainty caused by this Trump administration is harmful to both the Canadian and US economies.
Meanwhile, the CJA will:
- Monitor and inform the CJA membership as events unfold.
- Explore international alliances to fortify Canadian jewellers with this new reality.
